Dental implants are extremely valuable to people who are missing their natural teeth. They consist of titanium posts that are surgically implanted into your jaw to replicate your natural tooth roots. A permanent solution, dental implants require minor oral surgery to place. Your dedicated provider makes an incision in your gum tissue and inserts the implant through the socket left behind by your missing tooth. Once healed and integrated into your jawbone, a crown is placed on top of the post to act as a new, permanent tooth.
Your wisdom teeth, or the third molars, develop between the ages of 17 and 21. These teeth often don’t “fit” in your jaw, come in crooked, crowd existing teeth, or become impacted, meaning they never fully erupt. To prevent pain, infection, and changes to your bite, oral surgery may be recommended to remove the wisdom teeth.
Sometimes, teeth other than your wisdom teeth need to be removed due to infection or injury. Surgical extraction involves making an incision in the gum tissue, breaking the tooth into pieces, and removing these fragments.
During oral surgery, your mouth is numbed and you may opt for sedation, which puts you in an unaware state. You’re still able to answer important questions, but you don’t feel pain and are completely relaxed during your procedure.
Expect to need a few days of recovery following oral surgery. You’ll be sent home with gauze to apply pressure and halt any bleeding. The team recommends you use anti-inflammatory medications to relieve pain and swelling. You may feel best if you rest from work or social activities.
